Restaurants

Cafe Poca Cosa (Mexican)

Average Meal $20

cafepocacosatucson.com

Downtown: 110 E. Pennington 520-622-6400

In what is arguably Tucson's most creative Mexican restaurant, the chef prepares recipes inspired by different regions of her native Mexico. Order the daily Plato Poca Cosa, and the chef will select one beef, one chicken, and one vegetarian entrée for you to sample.Closed Sun.

Elle (Contemporary)

Meals $8 to $30

www.ellerestaurant.com

Central: 3048 E. Broadway

520-327-0500

Northern Californian, French, and Italian cuisines influence Elle's menu. Choose from pasta and risotto dishes, including squash ravioli with spinach, mushrooms, and sage butter, or try the grilled venison in roasted-garlic sauce with rosemeary polenta. Servers provide expert assistance in selecting the perfect wine.

Govinda (Vegetarian)

Meals $8-$12

www.govindasoftucson.com

Central: 711 E. Blacklidge Dr. 520-792-0630

One of the few places in town with a strictly meatless menu, this Hare Krishna-run restaurant has reasonably priced all-you-can-eat lunch and dinner buffets, which include vegan options. Hot and cold dishes vary daily, but ingredients are consistently fresh, and the food is tasty if not spicy. Choose from three seating areas, including an outdoor patio with a koi pond and an aviary, where you can hear the calls of the resident peacocks. No alcohol is served or permitted. MC, V. Closed Sun.

Wildflower Grill (Contemporary)

Meals $12 - $30

Northwest: 7037 N. Oracle Road 520.219-4230

Watch the sun set over the Tucson Mountains from either the outdoor terrace or the panoramic picture window inside -- then gaze at the twinkling city lights below as you feast on contemporary French fare like caramelized sea scallops with an Asian vegetable roll and mandarin orange sauce or filet mignon with sweet corn and shiitake mushrooms. Try a selection from the champagne bar, even if you don't usually indulge in bubbly. After dinner, stroll the fine art galleries in the imaginatively designed El Cortijo shopping complex. AE, D, MC, V. Closed Mon.

Vivace (Italian)

Meals $12 - $30

Foothills: 4310 N. Campbell Avenue 520-795-7221

This nouvelle Italian bistro in the lovely St. Philip's Plaza is a favorite with Tucsonans. Wild mushrooms and goat cheese in puff pastry is hard to resist as a starter. For a lighter alternative to such entrées as a rich osso buco, try the fettuccine with grilled salmon. For dessert, the moltenchocolate cake with spumoni ice cream, is worth the 20 minutes it takes to create. Patio seating is especially inviting on warm evenings. AE, D, MC, V. No lunch Sun.

Fleming's Steakhouse & Wine Bar

please call for pricing

www.flemingssteakhouse.com

Foothills: 6360 N. Campbell Avenue 520-529-5017

There's an art to eating well, and Fleming's is dedicated to it. Let us indulge you with the most succulent prime beef, the freshest seafood and a tempting array of delicious salads, sides and desserts.

Lovin Spoonfuls (Vegan)

please call for pricing

www.lovinspoonfuls.com

Central: 2990 N Campbell Avenue 520-325-7766

Delicious vegan food ordered at the counter and brought to your table. No alcohol served.

Zeman (Ethiopian)

Meals $8- $12

Central: 2731 E. Broadway Blvd 520-323-9928

It can be hard to get a table in this small eatery (except in summer, when the lack of air-conditioning presents a challenge). The sampler plate of any three items allows you to try dishes like yesimir wat (a spicy lentil dish) and lega tibs (a milder beef dish with a tomato sauce). Most of the food has a stewlike consistency so don't come if you feel the need to crunch. Everything is served on a communal platter with injera, a spongy bread, and eaten with the hands. Reservations not accepted. MC, V. BYOB.

Blue Willow (Contemporary)

Call for pricing

www.bluewillowtucson.com

Central: 2616 N Campbell Avenue 520-327-7577

The menu lists more kinds of omelettes than you have fingers and toes; they're bulky and are accompanied by toast, fruit and your choice of potatoes or rice. Most of the breakfast menu is served throughout the day, which may divert you from substantial lunch and dinner offerings such as quiche, crepes, soup, and vegetable and rice dishes. Don't fill up, though, because you'll need room for dessert; pies and cakes are baked on the premises and almost prove that chocolate is an independent food group.
