SENATOR EDWARD M. KENNEDY

Speaker: Senator Edward M. Kennedy has represented Massachusetts in the United States Senate since he was first elected in 1962 to finish the term of his brother, President John F. Kennedy. Since then, he has been re-elected seven times, and he is now the second most senior member of the Senate. Kennedy is the senior Democrat on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee in the Senate. He also serves on the Judiciary Committee, where he is the senior Democrat on the Immigration Subcommittee, and the Armed Services Committee, where he is the senior Democrat on the Seapower Subcommittee. He is also a member of the Congressional Joint Economic Committee, a founder of the Congressional Friends of Ireland, and a trustee of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Kennedy is the youngest of nine children of Joseph P. Kennedy and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, and is a graduate of Harvard and the University of Virginia Law School. His home is in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, where he lives with his wife, Victoria Reggie Kennedy, and children, Curran and Caroline. He also has three grown children, Kara, Edward Jr., and Patrick, and four grandchildren.

The Marks Memorial Lectures were established in 1979 to enrich the curriculum of the College of Law by bringing to it the scholarship and learning of eminent persons in various fields of law. The Lectures are held annually and published under the auspices of The University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law.

The College of Law is grateful to the late Judge Jack Marks and his wife, Selma Skora Paul, a 1956 graduate of The University of Arizona College of Law, for their generous support in endowing the lecture series in memory of his father, Isaac Marks.

Judge Jack Marks graduated from Columbia University School of Law in 1935 and practiced law in New York and Arizona. He was appointed Pima County’s first Superior Court Commissioner serving until 1965 when he became a judge. He retired from that position in 1980 having served, with distinction, the State of Arizona. Judge Marks died in 1983.

The late Isaac Marks was born February 3, 1875, in New York City, and died September 16, 1936. He was admitted to practice law in New York at the General Term of the Supreme Court of New York during July, 1895, after receiving a Bachelor of Laws degree June 10, 1895, from New York University School of Law. He practiced law with distinction in Manhattan for more than forty years.
