Question:  What is the Big Move?

Answer:  In June 2007, we will begin construction that will recreate and entirely transform the main law building, renovate the three large outside classrooms, and greatly expand and improve the courtyard that allows us to enjoy Arizona weather all year.  The project will create new and improved student space, a state-of-the-art law library, and modernize the classroom environment at the College.  As a result, the student experience at the College will be even better than it is already.

During construction, which we anticipate will last between 15 and 18 months, all College classrooms and administrative operations will occur within a 2-3 block radius of the current College of Law buildings (“Law Main”), as shown on the map below.  Although the main building will be closed during construction, the affected operations will take place in new locations just north and east of the College.   Library services and computer access, individual and group study space, and new student activity and lounge space, will all be provided.  The construction schedule anticipates our full (and joyous) return to a newly renovated College in the fall of 2008.

Question: What will happen during exams for spring, 2007 (this spring)?

Answer:  The project begins AFTER classes and exams are over this spring semester.  All exams will be conducted as usual in the College of Law. The Law Library will be open as usual for studying.

Question: Where will classes be next fall?

Answer:  Large classes will be held as usual in the three large classrooms at the College of Law, which we are calling the Ares Classrooms to avoid confusion. There may also be a few classes in Rountree Hall.  Other classes will be held in the Classroom Commons located at the corner of Mabel and Fremont, just north of the Park Avenue Garage.

Question: Is Rountree Hall affected by the Project?

Answer:    Rountree Hall will be fully operational during the Project.  Most people whose offices are usually in Rountree Hall will stay in Rountree Hall.  A few people may move to the Office Quad, to be near most of the College operations as well as to make room for some administrative operations that will need to be located in both places (such as IT, Library, and possibly others).  Once the precise location assignments have been made, they will be announced.

Question: When does school start in the fall?

Answer:  Classes begin August 20, which is one week later than the College of Law usually begins.  Because we are beginning one week later than usual, we will have one week of classes after the Thanksgiving break before exams begin.

Question: How will I know where to find things when I get back?

Answer:  We have posted a map of the Law Campus during Construction, which identifies all of the locations for College of Law activities.  Once classroom, office, and other assignments have been made, they will also be posted here.

Question: Where will faculty, staff, and administrative offices be in the fall?

Answer:  Most faculty, staff, and administrative offices will be in the Office Quad, a set of apartments located at Mabel and Park.  Once individual assignments have been determined, they will be posted here.  We will move into these offices in mid-August; between May and August, the best way to contact everyone will be via e-mail.

Question: Where will the library be in the fall?

Answer:  The Law Library will be housed in various convenient locations to meet the needs of all during the construction period.  The Library Annex will house much of the permanent library collection.  The Library Annex is convenient to Law Main and is located at the northeast corner of Speedway and Vine (formerly St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and more recently housing Landscape Architecture Studios).  Depending on anticipated needs, other collections will be housed at the Classroom Commons, Student Center, and Rountree Hall.

Computers will be available throughout the NW Law Complex.

Library staff will be mobile, serving students and faculty wherever they need service.  One or more will be located in each building in the NW Law Complex.

Question:  Where will we be able to study?

Answer:   Study areas will be available throughout the entire Law Campus.  Both the Classroom Commons and the Student Center will have space available for quiet study.  The Student Center will have space for group study.  The Library Annex will have space for quiet study.

Question: What will happen to student organizations, usual extra-curricular programs, speaker series, and lecture series?

Answer: All student organizations, extra-curricular activities, speaker and lecture series, will continue, just in a different place.

Question: Will I have a locker?

Answer:  We are working on a locker solution right now.  We are hopeful that we will be able to move lockers to the Classroom Commons.

Question:  What about food?

Answer:  The refrigerators and microwaves from the student Lounge will be moved to the new student center, and we hope to have food and coffee service in the Student Center.

Question: What about the sofa in the lobby?

Answer:  The sofa in the lobby will be moved to the Student Center.

Question:  When will the move to our temporary quarters be complete?

Answer:  The move out will happen at once; the move in to our temporary quarters will happen in stages and will be completed around the time classes begin.

Question:  Where will everyone be between the “move out” in May and the “move in” to temporary quarters over the summer?

Answer:  We are working on that.  The library staff will be in the Library Annex.  Some staff and administrators will be in Rountree Hall.  Faculty will be in offices on campus, in law firms, and elsewhere.  The best way to reach faculty will be via e-mail.  Once locations for staff and administrators have been determined, their locations will be posted on this site.

Question: When will we move back?

Answer:  The project is scheduled to be completed within 15 to 18 months from start of construction.  We should be back in the transformed College of Law in fall 2008.

Question:  What about computers?

Answer:  We will have wireless access throughout the NW Law Complex and computers will be available for student use.

Question:  What about parking?

Answer:  The Park Avenue Garage is as close to the NW Law Complex as it is to Law Main. Anyone with a Park Avenue Garage permit can continue as usual.

The Helen Street parking lot immediately behind the Ares Classrooms (Lot 1016) will be taken over by the construction project. Beginning May 15, replacement spaces for the rest of this year for Lot 1016 permits will automatically be available at the NW Law Complex, which is now called Lot 1224. Renewals will be for Lot 1224.   Disabled parking will be available at both the NW Law Complex and Law Main.

Zone 1 parking will be unchanged.  Zone 1 parking and the Highland Avenue Garage are both near the Library Annex.
