100% WALK-UP INTERVIEWS. In evaluating candidates, emphasis will be placed on research and writing ability, academic excellence, and demonstrated interest in government service. Applicants should be in the top one-third of their class and should have credentials demonstrating their superior writing ability and academic excellence such as: law review or journal participation, special honors for academic achievement, moot court or mock trial competition, participation in a legal aid program or other clinic, or significant summer work experience. Each successful candidate will be assigned to clerk for one or two Judges. Law clerks’ primary duties are legal research, drafting decisions and orders, and assisting the Judge to manage his or her docket and work with the parties. These positions are temporary two year appointments of recent law school graduates (graduating within the past couple of months from the date of hire) and are hired at GS-11, Step 1 of the General Schedule with a locality adjustment which for the Washington, D.C. area in 2009 the salary is $60,989. Law clerks are expected to stay for a minimum of one year and may stay for a maximum of two years.
