Assistant Dean Karen Kowalski focuses on developing and implementing strategies to expand career opportunities for students and alumni, including assessing trends and changes in the legal market, strategies to address them, and enhancing relationships with public and private employers in Arizona and nationally.  Prior to joining Arizona Law, Karen served as a Managing Director in the Chicago office of the largest and oldest international legal search firm, Major, Lindsey & Africa.  She counseled attorneys of all experience levels regarding job opportunities and achievement of career objectives.  Her job at Major, Lindsey & Africa required her to stay current with the ever-evolving legal marketplace by monitoring national and global business trends, changes in legal disciplines and organizational cultures, and trends in attorney hiring.  Prior to joining Major, Lindsey & Africa, Karen was a partner at the international law firm, Winston & Strawn LLP, specializing in federal and state tax law.  She holds a law degree from DePaul University College of Law where she was a member of the Order of the Coif and article and note editor for the DePaul Law Review.  She also received an LL.M. in taxation, with honors, from Georgetown University Law Center.  Karen serves as the Law College's liaison to the Board of Directors for the Pima County Bar Association.

Director Leah Won counsels Arizona Law students and alumni in career development and partners with employers to develop opportunities for the Arizona Law community.  Based in Phoenix, Leah connects Arizona Law students and alumni to one of the largest legal markets in the west, while supporting Arizona Law graduates in local, regional, and national job searches. Leah is a native Tucsonan and 2005 graduate of Arizona Law.  She practiced education law in California, representing public agencies in both private and government practice, including as deputy general counsel for San Francisco Unified School District.  Leah advised clients on the full range of legal issues encountered by public bodies, and specialized in the areas of labor and employment, charter schools, and board governance.  Leah received her B.A. from Stanford University and is a former elementary school teacher with Teach For America.

Director Virginia Clarke advises students and alumni on federal, state, and local judicial clerkships and coordinates (along with Dean Kowalski) the summer judicial externship program.  She supports Arizona Law students’ professional development by providing career counseling (primarily 2Ls), arranging regional interview programs, and serving enthusiastically as faculty sponsor of the Law School Running Club. Virginia came to Tucson from Pace Law School (NY), where she counseled alumni and re-entry attorneys.  Her prior practice experience includes corporate and securities law at the New York office of Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP and in-house counsel at GE Capital Corporation.  Virginia earned her J.D. from Northwestern University School of Law, where she was an articles editor for the Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business. She holds a B.A. from Williams College and worked as an insurance contract specialist before attending law school.

Career Counselor Mike Brooks primarily advises 1L Arizona Law students and alumni in their career development.  Mike also uses his technology background and experience to ensure that CareerCAT, Arizona Law’s job bank and recruitment system, is an effective tool for the College of Law's users. Prior to coming to the Career Development Office, Mike was an attorney at the Pima County Public Defender's Office, representing several hundred indigent clients charged with felonies. He also clerked for the Honorable Howard Fell at the Pima County Superior Court and clerked on the criminal side of the Pima County Attorney's Office. Mike has lived in Tucson his entire life and is a 2010 Arizona Law graduate. Mike obtained his undergraduate degree in computer science from the University of Arizona.  Prior to attending law school, Mike was a software development engineer.

Amanda Jantzi

Career Counselor Amanda Jantzi primarily advises Arizona Law’s international students and alumni those interested in international job opportunities. Amanda provides career and professional development programs and tailored career planning to a diverse student body, with a focus on Advanced Juris Doctor (AJD) students.  Amanda utilizes her prior international legal experience to assist LL.M. and JD students with navigating the international job search process.  Prior to joining Arizona Law, Amanda was a Career Counselor at the SUNY Buffalo Law School in Buffalo, New York, while also earning her Master’s in Higher Education Administration.  Before entering higher education, Amanda worked in the London office of the international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Derringer as a capital markets and securities attorney, specializing in foreign exempt equity and debt transactions. She received her J.D. from Cornell Law School in 2010, where she was Articles Editor for the Cornell International Law Journal.  Amanda graduated Phi Beta Kappa from William Smith College in 2006.  Before going to law school she worked as a political media consultant.

Lourdes Kosonoy oversees administrative operations and is the “nerve center” of the CDO. She responds to general inquiries from students and the public, assists with CDO’s recruiting events, manages CareerCAT job postings, and processes reciprocity requests. Lourdes joined the CDO from the Law College’s Finance Office, where she worked for six years. Before joining the Law College, Lourdes was a customer service specialist in the financial services industry. Lourdes is fluent in Spanish.
