Final "punchlist" items are being worked on, and many artistic touches are being made to the building. Heritage panels and historical photo displays have been added. The donor wall is nearing completion. Normal library operations have resumed. Students have already started to make the building their own, and on any given day can be seen using the quiet study spaces, the small group meeting rooms, and the lobby, patio, and courtyard areas.

This week we move into our upgraded building at 1201 E. Speedway Blvd., ending a 15-month construction project. The $21 million Law Commons Project renovated 117,000 square feet of space and is being completed on budget and on time.
This has been a big week - we reached "substantial completion" and passed the last test by the Fire Marshal. We now "own" the building and have a certificate of occupancy. But there is still much more work to be done, both inside and outside the building. The Hensel Phelps punch list of items to be fixed, installed, etc. will go on for two weeks. Hundreds of small details. Other contractors, most notably, the IT installers, the graphics design team (for donor wall, wall of fame, signage, etc.), Amerex Security, Walsh Bros. furniture, cleaning crews and the compact shelving installers, will still be in the building working right up to the start of classes.
It has also been a big day. The entire library collection is now back on the shelves, mostly in order, and we are working to get the library up and running ASAP. We're waiting for furniture and the finishing touches on the stand alone shelving and the installation of a few more sections of shelving on the main floor.
On Friday. October 24, at 4pm, there will be the Law Commons Project ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony. Reception will follow.

Each week of construction shows significant changes as we near completion of the Law Commons project, on time and at budget. Major construction is scheduled for completion at the end of June. July projects will include the installing of information technology, signage, furniture systems and completion of punch-list items.

Among the many changes: The library’s compact shelving installation is ongoing. Library carpeting and painting is completed and Ceilings are being installed in the first floor lobby. Workers are glazing the interior (walls and windows). The basement is completed and the main floor installation is currently underway. Interior doors have been hung.
The patio and courtyard areas are almost completed: pavers have been set, tables installed, planters formed and concrete for the upper is patio about to be poured. Landscaping is ongoing and the paving of the parking lot will begin at the end of the month.

The new "face" of Arizona Law is visible from Speedway, and the framework for the shade structures on the north and south faces of the building have been installed. Transformation of the common outdoor areas is well underway: wide concrete walkways were recently poured, and landscaping continues. The heating and air conditioning system is operational and will be turned on as soon as the glazing is installed on the north wall. Ceiling tiles in the basement are being placed and extensive data wiring will begin within a week. Painting has begun in the basement. This has been a month of dramatic changes, enabling us to truly recognize the new life that the Law Commons will bring to the Arizona Law community.

Progress on the new building continues on schedule. Electrical and plumbing "rough-in" is completed, as is the drywall installation. Taping of the drywall in preparation of painting has begun. The new heating and ventilation system has been installed. Tucsonans can see remarkable changes to the Speedway facade, where exterior glass has been installed, and a sun shade on will be installed over the next several weeks. Framing for the glass on the north face of the building has begun. The courtyard trees have been planted and preparation of the courtyard for the installation of the pavers has begun. Concrete has begun to be poured for the creation of the walkway from Helen Street.

Photos from a recent hardhat tour detail the exciting changes made in the last two weeks to the main law building. Excavation of the courtyard area, the north side of the library, and the north administrative offices on the first floor will set the stage for our transformed law library and student space, and will bring natural light into the building's lower level. Recent photos can be viewed here, and you can follow the Law Commons project live, via webcam, here.
6/15/07 Hensel Phelps Construction has completed its site move-in and will manage operations from trailers located in the north parking lot. The main law building and parking lot remain closed. The UA's Facilities Design and Construction office has installed a web cam showing the north facade of the Law Building. Click on the image to the left to view the live webcam. The current webcam photos show the courtyard after outdoor classroom 138 was removed. Future photos will show the central open space as it develops, and the installation of the new skylight over the existing roof terrace.

To improve outdoor space, and allow for the future construction of lightwells along the north wall of the main building, the small existing courtyard was excavated. Click on the image to the left to view more photographs.
