09/04/2008 LAW COMMONS - SEPTEMBER 2008 UPDATE

September 2008 UpdateFinal "punchlist" items are being worked on, and many artistic touches are being made to the building. Heritage panels and historical photo displays have been added. The donor wall is nearing completion. Normal library operations have resumed. Students have already started to make the building their own, and on any given day can be seen using the quiet study spaces, the small group meeting rooms, and the lobby, patio, and courtyard areas.

08/04/2008 LAW COMMONS - AUGUST 2008 UPDATE

Click here to view the May 2008 Photo GalleryThis week we move into our upgraded building at 1201 E. Speedway Blvd., ending a 15-month construction project. The $21 million Law Commons Project renovated 117,000 square feet of space and is being completed on budget and on time.

This has been a big week - we reached "substantial completion" and passed the last test by the Fire Marshal. We now "own" the building and have a certificate of occupancy. But there is still much more work to be done, both inside and outside the building. The Hensel Phelps punch list of items to be fixed, installed, etc. will go on for two weeks. Hundreds of small details. Other contractors, most notably, the IT installers, the graphics design team (for donor wall, wall of fame, signage, etc.), Amerex Security, Walsh Bros. furniture, cleaning crews and the compact shelving installers, will still be in the building working right up to the start of classes.

It has also been a big day. The entire library collection is now back on the shelves, mostly in order, and we are working to get the library up and running ASAP. We're waiting for furniture and the finishing touches on the stand alone shelving and the installation of a few more sections of shelving on the main floor.

On Friday. October 24, at 4pm, there will be the Law Commons Project ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony. Reception will follow.

03/21/2008LAW COMMONS - MARCH 2008 UPDATE

March 2008The new "face" of Arizona Law is visible from Speedway, and the framework for the shade structures on the north and south faces of the building have been installed. Transformation of the common outdoor areas is well underway: wide concrete walkways were recently poured, and landscaping continues. The heating and air conditioning system is operational and will be turned on as soon as the glazing is installed on the north wall. Ceiling tiles in the basement are being placed and extensive data wiring will begin within a week. Painting has begun in the basement. This has been a month of dramatic changes, enabling us to truly recognize the new life that the Law Commons will bring to the Arizona Law community.
