Certificate and Upper Level Course Schedule Info Session

 Led by the law faculty directors of the various certificate programs, this session will introduce students to the various law certificates, the requirements that students must fulfill to obtain a certificate and general information about the upper level curriculum.This session should be attended by any student interested in Spring 2014 and beyond upper level course offerings and how they should prepare their 2L and 3L course schedules.

Indigent Defense and The Implications of Gideon v. Wainwright

The American Constitution Society invites you to join us and Jeff Roth on Monday, September 30 at noon in room 168. Jeff Roth, an attorney with the Maricopa County Public Defender's Office, will be speaking about indigent defense, the practical aspects of being a public defender and the implications of Gideon v. Wainwright. Jimmy John's will be served.

Panel Discussion on the "Baby Veronica" Indian Child Welfare Case Featuring Professor Barbara Atwood

There will be a live and live webcast presentation at the James E. Rogers College of Law of a panel discussion on the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision involving the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl, (the "Baby Veronica" case). The widely-publicized case represents one of the Court's most important decisions in recent decades on issues of central concern to Family Law and Federal Indian Law. The live webcast event will take place on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. (Tucson time) and will be webcast from Western New England University School of Law, Blake Law Center in Springfield, Massachusetts with panelists that include Professor Laura Briggs, Chair, Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies Dept. at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Trace A. DeMeyer, Shawnee-Cherokee author, journalist, and blogger. The "live" part of the event will occur at the James E. Rogers College of Law, Room 138, where, via Skype, UA Law Professor Barbara Atwood, Mary Anne Richey Professor Emerita of Law and one of the country's foremost authorities on the ICWA, will participate in the panel presentation. Seating in the room is limited, and doors will be closed once Professor Atwood begins her Skype presentation, so please try to arrive by 3:30 if you plan to attend. Thank you.

Arizona Supreme Court Visit

Location: Ares Auditorium Room 164

 The Arizona Supreme Court makes its annual visit to Tucson on October 1, hosted by the William H. Rehnquist Center. The Court will hear arguments on two different cases. You must register for this in advance and bring your ticket with photo ID for admission. Case summaries are available here; a link to security and court protocols is available here. NO backpacks or electronic equipment permitted in the room; cell phones will be allowed but must be turned off.

PCLP: Charles Flanagan - Director of AZ Dept of Juvenile Corrections

This Wednesday, October 2, PCLP is proud to host Mr. Charles Flanagan who is the Director of the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections. 

Charles Flanagan was appointed by Governor Janice K. Brewer as the Director of the Arizona Department of Juvenile Corrections (ADJC) effective July 8, 2011. Prior to this assignment, he served as the Deputy Director of the Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC).

Director Flanagan has more than 27 years of correctional experience and has administered academic and career technical education for ADC.  He has substantial knowledge of corrections-related industries, prison operations, correctional education and correctional health services.??

We will meet in Room 156 and pizza will be served at 12pm.

Preliminary competition-Jenckes Competition & Trial Competition

Location: Room 164

Our law school competition to select our two representatives will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, October  2 and  3, between 1:00  and  5:00 p.m. in Room 164. 

 

The runoff round, in which the top five contestants will repeat their  arguments, will be on Thursday,  October 10,at 3:00pm in Room 164.The top two contestants will  represent the law college in the competition against ASU.

 

We will also be using the Jenckes Competition to select the students who will be on the Trial Competition  Team,  which competes in the annual trial competition against other  law schools in February. Members of the team receive 2 credits (pass-fail) in the spring semester.

Training for Preparation of Advance Directives

Location: Room 160

 Each year a small group of students from our school participate in a clinic that helps senior citizens understand and prepare their advance directives for end-of-life care. Students work one-on-one with people who want to complete the required forms. Volunteer lawyers ensure that all the state's requirements are met. It is an often overlooked community service that can make a huge difference in a person, and their loved ones, face end of life experiences. It is also a good thing to know about for ourselves, our families and our future clients.

TRAINING is mandatory. Please come on Friday October 4th noon-1:30 in room 160.

The clinic will take place as part of a health fair on: Thursday, October 17th at Armory Park Senior Center, 10am-1pm.

Student Assistants wil be there by 9:30 (We can make arrangements if you have a class that runs a bit later).

Tucson Meet and Greet

Members of the Arizona Asian American Bar Association (AAABA) will be coming down to Tucson for their annual Tucson Meet and Greet Happy Hour. This year it will be at Thunder Canyon Brewery's Downtown location on Friday, October 4th. AAABA will be happily providing some appetizers from 4:30 - 7:00 p.m. and beverages will be available for purchase. AAABA is a wonderful, welcoming organization that holds fun networking events throughout the year.
