Prof. Anaya Issues Statement Concerning Custody of Baby Veronica

On September 10, 2013, Prof. Anaya, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, issued a statement urging consideration of Baby Veronica’s rights as a child and as a member of the Cherokee Nation. The U.S. Supreme Court in June decided that the Indian Child Welfare Act did not apply given the facts of this case (Adoptive Couple v. Baby Girl), but her father and the adoptive couple have continued to litigate custody. Read a release about Prof. Anaya’s statement here.
