Professor Nagan, IPLP Distinguished Visiting Scholar, to Speak at College of Law

Indigenous Peoples Law and Policy (IPLP) Program 2006 - 2007 IPLP Colloquium Speaker Series begins with Professor Winston P. Nagan, who will be visiting the College of Law as the IPLP Distinguished Visiting Scholar and Indigenous Rights Advocate, on Thursday, October 12, 2006. Professor Nagen, Sam T. Dell Research Scholar Professor of Law and Director of the Institute for Human Rights, Peace and Development at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, will speak on “The Human Rights Challenges Facing the Shuar in Ecuador” in Rountree Hall, Room 215, from 3:45 - 5:00.  Western fascination with the Shuar dates back to the nineteenth century and the widely reported practices of shrinking heads. An infamous 1921 National Geographic article on the Shuar can be found at www.head-hunter.com/ng.html.  Today, the Shuar face intense pressures on their traditional lands from oil and other development interests. The event will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.
