Course Description

Domestic Violence Clinic

Rule 38(d) law students are certified as legal counsel to represent clients before the Pima County Domestic Violence Court, Tucson City Court and Pima County Superior Court. Students gain hands on experience litigating cases and representing clients pursuant to the Domestic Violence Act, Arizona Victim’s Rights Act, and Title 25-Marital and Domestic Relations code. Students are part of a larger legal system that strives to provide safety for adults and children. In addition, law students collaborate with social work students to meet with clients on a weekly basis to provide information, advice and referrals regarding civil domestic violence orders of protection, criminal prosecution of misdemeanor acts of domestic violence, family law (child custody, child support, spousal maintenance, and property disputes), immigration relief (Violence Against Women Act), and a myriad of other legal issues that are impacted by domestic violence. Clients have enhanced access to justice with the help of Spanish language interns that provide interpretation and translation assistance to the clinic clients.
