Students will study legal issues pertinent to student, teacher and administrator rights and responsibilities in the educational system. This is a survey course of the major areas and issues in education impacted by the legal system. The processes and structures of law are reviewed and practices to avoid legal infringements in the schools are addressed. The following topics will be covered: the legal structure of education; school attendance; church and state in the schools; the instructional program; student rights; rights of disabled children; desegregation; torts and liability; defamation & student records; certification, tenure, teacher rights & freedoms; finance, access and equity in education.
