Veterans Advocacy Law Clinic

Welcome

Welcome to the Veterans' Advocacy Law Clinic. This Clinic provides students the opportunity to assist current and former military service members with legal issues, including representing these individuals before local Veterans Courts and on administrative cases, as well as work on policy issues relating to military service.

There are over 150,000 veterans in Southern Arizona and Tucson is home to the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, an active U.S. military installation assigned to the Twelfth Air Force and part of the Air Combat Command. The Veterans' Advocacy Law Clinic is a hybrid, multi-disciplinary legal clinic that provides pro bono legal services to those who have served, and their families and communities

Currently, we provide three different types of services to the veteran community in Southern Arizona:

Veterans Courts:  Our Clinic represents veterans in the Regional Military Veterans Treatment Court and in the Pima County Justice Court Veterans Court.  Our clients have included veterans from all eras, all branches, active duty, National Guard and reserve components. These are criminal courts and eligibility is currently limited to misdemeanor offenses only. Please contact the courts directly to determine if you are eligible to participate.

Discharge Upgrade Assistance: The Clinic works on selected discharge upgrade cases in conjunction with local attorneys and veterans service organizations. These cases seek to assist veterans who were discharged with a status below honorable challenge and change the discharge status to honorable so that they may gain access to VA and educational benefits.

Policy Work:  Our Clinic students also participate in legal work to help change or address varying policy concerns as they relate to veterans. This includes, but is not limited to, hosting the Veterans Court Southwest Symposium and Workshop, advocacy work on behalf of the veterans’ court movement, and interaction with the community in varying forums.
